# Before you clean Windows: backup, restore point and what not to delete

Most cleanup regrets come from deleting something before checking what it was. Five small habits make a cleanup safe, whatever tool you use.

## 1. Back up what matters

Copy documents, photos and project files to an external drive or cloud storage. A cleanup should never be the only thing standing between you and a lost file.

## 2. Create a restore point

If System Protection is on, open Control Panel → System → System Protection and choose Create. A restore point helps with system settings and drivers; it is not a backup of your personal files.

## 3. Preview before you remove

Read what each category contains before you tick it. Windows lists temporary files, update data and old installations separately for a reason: some are always safe, some change what you can undo.

## 4. Know what not to delete by hand

Files inside the Windows, System32 and WinSxS folders, and hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys and swapfile.sys, are managed by Windows. Use supported tools instead of File Explorer for these.

## 5. Prefer reversible steps

Move rarely used large files to an external drive before deleting them. Keep the Recycle Bin until you are sure. If a tool offers an undo or history, use it.

## Where Rain Cleaner fits

Rain Cleaner (Windows 10/11, 64-bit) shows what it found, with an explanation for each item, before it removes anything, and keeps a history of what it did; Pro can undo supported changes. The Free version has no ads; Pro has a free 14-day trial (no card).

## FAQ

**Is a restore point the same as a backup?**

No. A restore point covers system files, settings and drivers. Your documents and photos need a separate backup.

**Which Windows files should I never delete manually?**

Anything inside the Windows, System32 and WinSxS folders, and hiberfil.sys, pagefile.sys and swapfile.sys. Use supported tools for these.

**Why preview before cleaning?**

Because the same category can hold disposable files and files you still need. Reading first avoids irreversible mistakes.
