# How to delete temporary files on Windows 11 safely

Some temporary files are disposable. Your Downloads folder is not automatically junk. Windows 11 lists removable data under Temporary files, and the key is to read each category before you tick it.

## Open the built-in list

Go to Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files. Windows scans and lists categories such as temporary files, thumbnails, Delivery Optimization files, cached update data, Windows upgrade files and the Recycle Bin. The exact list depends on the PC.

## Usually fine to remove

Temporary files and thumbnails are rebuilt by Windows or the apps that use them. Delivery Optimization files are cached update pieces. Removing them frees space and is normally harmless, although things may be slightly slower the first time they are rebuilt.

## Check before you tick

Downloads: this is your own folder, often a holding area for installers and documents. Leave it unticked unless you have checked it.
Recycle Bin: files here are still recoverable until you empty it. Make sure nothing in it is needed.
Previous Windows installation and Windows upgrade files: deleting them can free a lot of space but removes the option to go back to the earlier version.

## The classic way: Disk Cleanup

Search for Disk Cleanup (or run cleanmgr), pick the Windows drive and select Clean up system files for extra categories. The same rule applies: read each entry first.

## Automate with care: Storage Sense

Storage Sense (Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense) can remove temporary files and old Recycle Bin contents on a schedule. Review its rules before enabling it and keep automatic Downloads cleanup off unless you really want it.

## What not to expect

Clearing temporary files recovers space; it does not increase CPU, GPU or internet speed. If the real problem is a large game, a video folder or a slow app, see our guides on freeing disk space and on the Windows 11 PC health check.

## Where Rain Cleaner fits

Rain Cleaner (Windows 10/11, 64-bit) shows what it found, with an explanation for each item, before it removes anything. The Free version has no ads; Pro has a free 14-day trial (no card). You can do everything above with Windows alone - Rain Cleaner is just another workflow.

## FAQ

**Is it safe to delete everything under Temporary files?**

Not blindly. Temporary files and thumbnails are normally safe; Downloads, the Recycle Bin and a Previous Windows installation deserve a look first.

**Will deleting temporary files speed up my PC?**

It frees disk space. It does not by itself make the processor, graphics card or internet faster.

**How often should I do it?**

Only when you need the space, or let Storage Sense do it with rules you have reviewed.
