# Do you need to install chipset drivers on Windows?

Chipset drivers are the quiet ones: they never show a window, but they sit between Windows and the motherboard. Windows includes generic versions that work for most people. Here is when the maker's version is worth installing.

## What chipset drivers do

They tell Windows how the motherboard's controllers work: power management, USB and storage controllers, PCI Express, and special features of the platform. They are small, and a wrong or missing one rarely produces an obvious error.

## Does Windows already include them?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 ship generic drivers and Windows Update can add newer ones, so most PCs run fine without installing anything by hand. Device Manager shows the leftover problems: unknown devices or Code 28 under System devices.

## When the maker's version is worth it

Install it when Device Manager shows unknown system devices, when the PC maker lists a chipset or platform driver for your model, after a clean install on a laptop (power management and hotkeys often depend on it), or when you see odd USB, sleep or battery behaviour that started after installing Windows.

## How to install them safely

Take the package from your PC or motherboard maker for your exact model, or from the chip maker (Intel or AMD) on a self-built PC. Create a restore point first, install, and restart. Do not install a chipset package built for a different platform or generation.

## What not to do

Do not hunt for the 'newest' version just to have it, and do not use driver-pack websites. If the PC runs well and Device Manager is clean, leaving the chipset drivers alone is a perfectly good decision.

## FAQ

**Will chipset drivers make my PC faster?**

Not noticeably. They mainly improve compatibility, power handling and stability.

**Intel or AMD chipset driver, which one?**

The one for your platform: Intel chipset drivers for Intel boards, AMD chipset drivers for AMD boards. Your motherboard or PC maker's page lists the right package.
