# How to find drivers for an old 32-bit Windows 7 laptop

Old laptops are still useful, but their drivers are scattered and their makers' pages change. Here is a reliable order of attack that avoids the sketchy driver sites.

## Confirm whether Windows is 32-bit

Open Control Panel → System. 'System type' says 32-bit Operating System or 64-bit. A 32-bit driver will not work on 64-bit Windows and the reverse, so get this right first. Also note the exact laptop model on the bottom label.

## Identify the hardware by its IDs

In Device Manager, open an unknown device's Properties → Details → Hardware Ids. The PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx values identify the chip maker and model. Common vendor codes: 8086 Intel, 10DE NVIDIA, 1002 AMD/ATI, 10EC Realtek, 14E4 Broadcom, 168C Atheros.

## Start with the laptop maker's support pages

Enter the exact model on the maker's support site (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, Toshiba/Dynabook, Fujitsu and Samsung all keep archives). Choose Windows 7 32-bit. Those packages were tested together and are the best choice. Microsoft's own Update Catalog also still lists many older drivers.

## Legacy graphics, network, audio and chipset

If the maker's page has none, go to the chip maker: NVIDIA, AMD and Intel keep legacy driver archives for old graphics; Realtek, Broadcom, Atheros and Intel for network and audio. Install chipset first, then graphics, then the rest.

## When no compatible signed driver exists

32-bit Windows 7 will accept an unsigned driver after a warning, but 64-bit will not. Take care: Windows 7 no longer receives security updates and modern websites may fail without updated TLS support, so keep such a laptop off sensitive accounts.

## FAQ

**Is it safe to use a driver-pack download site?**

We recommend against it. Packs from third-party sites are a common way to pick up unwanted software. Use the laptop maker or chip maker.

**Can I use a Windows 10 driver on Windows 7?**

Rarely. Match the driver to the Windows version and to 32-bit or 64-bit.
