# How to free up disk space on Windows 11 safely

Running out of storage does not automatically mean you need a third-party cleaner. Windows already has tools for temporary files, old installation data and unused apps. The important part is knowing what you are deleting.

## 1. Check what is actually using the space

Open Settings → System → Storage. Windows splits storage into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Other and System & reserved. Start here instead of guessing, and open any category that looks unusually large.
A cleaner should not be the first step when the real problem is a 70 GB game, a large video folder or an old virtual machine.

## 2. Review Temporary files

Open Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files. Windows may list temporary files, thumbnails, Delivery Optimization files, cached update data and the Recycle Bin.
Do not simply tick every box. Read each category first, and pay particular attention to Downloads, the Recycle Bin, a Previous Windows installation and Windows upgrade files. Deleting a previous installation can recover a lot of space, but it also removes your ability to go back to it.

## 3. Use Cleanup recommendations

Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations can point to temporary files, large or unused files, files synchronised to cloud storage and apps you rarely use.
Treat it as a list to inspect, not an instruction to delete everything. A 12 GB video project may be your largest file and still be important.

## 4. Turn on Storage Sense carefully

Storage Sense (Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense) can remove temporary data and old Recycle Bin contents automatically. Open its settings and review the rules before enabling it, especially how it treats the Recycle Bin, Downloads and locally stored cloud files.
Many people use Downloads as a holding area for installers and documents, so do not enable automatic deletion of Downloads just because the option exists.

## 5. Use Disk Cleanup

The classic Disk Cleanup still exists. Search for Disk Cleanup (or run cleanmgr), choose the Windows drive, and select Clean up system files to see more Windows-related categories. Review the categories before confirming.

## 6. Remove apps you no longer use

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and sort by size. Removing one unused 30 GB game can recover more space than clearing a few hundred megabytes of caches.
Do not uninstall components just because you do not recognise their names: drivers, runtimes and supporting software may be needed by other programs.

## 7. Check your own large files

Videos, disk images, archives and backups can take a lot of space without being junk. Look in Downloads, Videos, Desktop and Documents, or search File Explorer for large files. Before deleting an archive or backup whose contents matter, confirm that another copy exists.

## Does freeing disk space make Windows faster?

Sometimes. A drive that is almost full can cause trouble for Windows updates, temporary files and normal operation, and freeing space helps there. But deleting temporary files does not increase CPU speed, GPU performance or internet speed. If the PC is slow for other reasons - background apps, malware, failing storage - storage cleanup is maintenance, not a universal performance fix.

## Where Rain Cleaner fits

Rain Cleaner is an optional Windows 10/11 cleanup tool for people who prefer one interface for reviewing cleanup opportunities. It shows what it found before you decide what to remove, instead of presenting every item as something that must disappear. The Free version has no ads; Pro has a free 7-day trial (no card).
You do not need Rain Cleaner for basic cleanup - Windows already has good built-in tools. It is useful when you want those checks organised in one place.

## FAQ

**Is it safe to delete everything under Temporary files?**

Not blindly. Read each category first. Downloads, the Recycle Bin and a Previous Windows installation can contain things you still want.

**Should I turn on Storage Sense?**

It is useful if its rules match how you use the PC. Review what it does with the Recycle Bin, Downloads and cloud files before enabling it.

**Is Disk Cleanup still available in Windows 11?**

Yes. Search for Disk Cleanup or run cleanmgr. The newer Storage page covers much of the same ground.
