# Windows protected your PC? How to verify and run Rain Cleaner

Rain Cleaner is currently unsigned while our company code-signing verification is being completed. Windows SmartScreen can therefore show an Unknown publisher or Windows protected your PC message. This page shows how to check the file yourself before you run it.

## 1. Download from an official place

Use raincleaner.eu or the official GitHub release at github.com/raincleaner/RainCleaner/releases. Both serve the same files with the same SHA-256 values. Rain Cleaner has an installer (.msi) and a portable version (.zip).

## 2. Check the SHA-256

Open PowerShell in the folder with the file and run the command below, then compare the result with the value published for the current release on our Trust page.
Get-FileHash .\RainCleaner-Setup-2.13.0.msi -Algorithm SHA256
If the values differ, do not run the file and tell us at support@raincleaner.eu.

## 3. Scan it with Microsoft Defender

In File Explorer right-click the downloaded file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender (on Windows 11 you may first need Show more options). A clean scan is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that any file is risk-free. Release 2.13.0 was scanned with Microsoft Defender on 2026-10-01 with no threats reported at that time.

## 4. If Windows shows Windows protected your PC

This message appears for apps without a trusted code-signing signature or without enough download reputation. If you downloaded the file from our site or our GitHub release and the SHA-256 matches, you can choose More info and then Run anyway.
Do not turn SmartScreen off globally. If you would rather avoid the screen entirely, use the portable version.

## 5. Removing Rain Cleaner later

Use Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the installer version. The portable version is removed by deleting its folder.

## Why is it unsigned?

Code-signing certificates for companies require identity verification, and ours is still in progress. We state this openly instead of hiding it, and we will announce the change when the builds are signed.

## FAQ

**Is the SmartScreen warning a sign that Rain Cleaner is malware?**

No. It means the file is not signed by a trusted publisher and is not widely downloaded yet. That is why we publish hashes and ask you to verify the file.

**Should I disable SmartScreen?**

No. Keep it on and use More info → Run anyway only for a file whose SHA-256 you have verified.

**Where do I find the current hash?**

On the Trust page and on the GitHub release page for the same version.
