Questions
Does it work if Windows won't boot?
Yes, that is what it is for. Rain Recovery runs from the Windows recovery environment, not from the normal desktop.
Do I need a USB stick?
No. Your phone and its USB cable take its place.
Do I need internet?
Not for repair or driver restore. A reinstall needs the phone to download Windows first, if it is not already saved.
What if BitLocker is enabled?
You will need your BitLocker recovery key before Windows files can be reached.
Technical details and limits
- Windows 10 and Windows 11. The USB connection uses the phone's USB tethering (RNDIS or NCM); a Wi-Fi fallback is being validated.
- If the disk or the recovery partition is physically missing or destroyed, separate recovery media may still be needed.
- Rain Cleaner installers are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn about an unknown publisher. File hashes are on the Trust page.
- Not for sale yet: it is still being tested on real Windows and Android hardware.
